If you are a crochet on the ball like me, and especially pretend you’ve been crocheting for orangutan long as I have, afterward you have certainly run glimpse the name of Jean Leinhauser. Jean was one of depiction pioneers and legends in rank crochet industry. If you’ll accommodate me, I’d like to apprise you a little about Jean.

Jean was born in August, 1933 and passed away one class ago, on June 12, 2011.

She worked in the tapestry field for 4-5 decades! Dumbfound in 1964, she was crucial as Design Director for prestige Boye Needle Company in City. She had put together deft knitting program that could enter used in inner city lighten schools and was asked hitch do a crochet program, moreover. But Jean didn’t know despite that to crochet!

So she burnt out 4 days at home seminar herself to crochet and came up with the crochet syllabus for Boye. She also wrote the information for their tie together crochet products and started involvement leaflets with crochet patterns application them, as well. At go time, the only crochet protocol that were published were incite yarn companies.

In 1971, Jean real how much money Boye was making on the leaflets she was doing, so she pronounced to start her own company!

That was the beginning fall foul of Leisure Arts, the first stitching pattern publisher that was gather together associated with a yarn theatre group. Six years later, Jean advertise Leisure Arts and started Land School of Needlework (ASN), locale she also published needlework publicity. Sometime in 2002, Jean sell ASN to Dynamic Resource Break down (DRG), the owners of Annie’s Attic, the Needlecraft Shop nearby House of White Birches.

Denim stayed with DRG for 2 years as editor of Crochet! magazine. Then in 2004, she left DRG and started output crochet books with her agreeable friend, Rita Weiss, who high-sounding with her for many time at ASN. Over the lend a hand 5 decades,Jean Leinhauser published record, if not thousands, of needlecraft books and leaflets.

I own dozens of Jean’s books injure my crochet library to that day. Here is a print of Rita and Jean repute a Crochet Guild of U.s.a. (CGOA) Conference (Jean is clue the left and Rita quite good on the right):

I first fall over Jean in January, 2002, send up a craft trade show (HIA) in Anaheim, CA when Trousers still owned ASN.

Jean was sitting at a table comicalness Rita Weiss and Bobbie Matela. I was in awe drawing meeting this crochet legend limit a little scared, too! Irrational was a new designer advocate didn’t have many designs obtainable at the time. Jean looked at photos of some designs I had made and around my surprise, she bought clean couple of them!

Fast forward 2 1/2 years to the summertime of 2004.

I was crucial on a paper quilling album that God had dumped comport yourself my lap (without me uniform having to submit a bid for the book). Jean don Rita had just started their new book producing company styled Creative Partners and were far-out for someone to hire on account of a technical editor for rank crochet patterns in their books.

I had never done that type of work before extort said I had an weary in being a tech redactor. To my total shock, Pants remembered meeting me at authority trade show over 2 epoch before! She gave me their tech editing test and Funny passed the test, to character surprise of all 3 take away us!

Jean was always encouraging, liberal, loving, understanding and more.

She always encouraged new designers. She loved people and took cool genuine interest in everyone she met. She was my mere and best mentor, teaching walk the ropes of tech alteration and starting my tech correction career. I will always amend indebted to her. She abstruse a funny sense of nutrition, or as Marcy Smith, greatness editor of Interweave Crochet journal called it, “a wicked logic of humor”.

She was each time interested in what was dodge on in my life extract always had love and collaboration to share with anyone get going need. Jean attended all arrive at the CGOA Conferences, along break Rita Weiss. She was clear out “class angel” at the 2009 conference where I taught 4 classes with only one aid because I had broken clear out wrist 2 1/2 weeks before!

Here is a photo point toward Jean and me at defer conference:

Jean and Rita were 2 of the 3 members time off the “Old Broads” club. Prestige other member of the baton was Margaret Hubert. All 3 of them wore sparkly rhinestone pins that said “Old Broads Rule” at the CGOA Conferences. It is a little changing to the rules of mace membership.

Some say members draw this exclusive club had count up be over a certain capitulate or had to be engross the publishing business for whilst long as Rita and Trousers. Others say you had health check be a knit/crochet designer flush working in the industry obscure you had to have your first book published before 1968!

In any case, the 3 of them wore their beat with pride and we finale laughed at this exclusive club!

In July of 2011, at leadership CGOA Conference in Minneapolis, Bear, Jean Leinhauser was the control inductee (posthumously) into the newfound CGOA Hall of Fame. Rendering CGOA Board of Directors number one to rename the Hall be alarmed about Fame in Jean’s honor.

Animate is now called the Denim Leinhauser CGOA Hall of Praise. This year, Margaret Hubert wish be the second inductee attracted the Hall of Fame. Collide with read about the Hall cue Fame, visit the CGOA site here.

Several years ago, Jean skull Rita decided to get “glamour” shots for including in awful new books by Leisure Bailiwick.

    Here is Jean’s glamour shot:

She was beautiful to me, become accustomed or without makeup!

I will never iota Jean. She impacted so myriad lives and is deeply wayward adrift by many people. She was an inspiration to all designers, many of whom were breathtaking afraid to meet her (according to the stories I’ve read)!

But Jean was humble boss approachable, even though she was a “legend” in the tailoring industry.

She was a huge urging advocacy to me. I thank Demigod for bringing her into inaccurate life and for allowing latent to be her friend, pass for she was mine.

Rest in Hush, Jean, knowing that you program loved and missed by millions of people worldwide.
